What are the Web Site Statistics of First Nations in Ontario?
Of 136 First Nations in Ontario, 39.7% (54 First Nations) have their own web site, 54.4% (74 First Nations) do not have their own web site, and 5.9% (18 First Nations) are undetermined. As more First Nations across Canada gain access to internet services many see the increasing benefits of having an official web site.

How does having a corporate website benefit the people of each individual band?
Considering that more then 54% of aboriginal people live outside the First Nations, there are numerous benefits in terms of creating and sustaining a nation’s unity, promoting programs, providing history and information on current issues and concerns, plus sharing our culture, teachings and lifestyle.

How does being informed… get me a better community?
I took the opportunity to browse several First Nation web sites and loved it! It was like being there, especially being able to view pictures of community gatherings and events, as well as reading local community news, it made me feel good! And, even though they were not from my area, it eased my own feelings of being far from home; it’s comforting to be able to “see” First Nation people, my people, again.

My First Nation has a profile on a web site, why do we need our own website?
Firstly, congratulations for having your First Nation profile online via Tribal Council, PTO, INAC, or other organization web site list or directory. However, having a profile is not the same thing as having a web site of your own. As mentioned above, there are many reasons and uses for web sites – that is up to you!

What are the costs - is this going to be expensive?
No, custom designed web sites are surprisingly inexpensive. In this age of mass media and newly evolving technology, the global market place is quickly becoming a vital factor to all peoples, organizations and business. Authentic Ojibway Tikinagans

Who am I?
I'm the one in the picture in my own Tikinagan at the age of 9 months.
My name is Irene Goodwin, I’m an Ojibway from Northwestern Ontario, currently residing in Ottawa.

The first half of my life was one of experiencing the Indigenous lifestyle, culture and heritage. Our traditional lands are not recognized as a First Nation or reserve - we lived a lifestyle based on the lands, moving from region to region according to the weather conditions and availability of wildlife and game animals. As Ojibways leading a traditional lifestyle we used natural materials and items that suited our peoples.

In terms of our infants, we used what is known as Tikinagans to both wrap and carry our young babies and children, keeping them safe and secure, even while moving from one area to the next. My family has, for many generations used Tikinagans, and we continue to use them for our own babies today.

My mother, Lena Slipperjack created 2 beautiful tikinagans for sale.
These tikinagans (baby cradle boards) are elaborately beaded; hand carved, painted and finished, and include the internal pad and wrappings. They are created for actual use, but can be displayed as beautiful pieces of art.
