Indigenous Spirit - Featured Profiles
o Is there someone you know that best reflects the good character and values of Indigenous people?
o Is there someone that has given you the inspiration to continue on your path towards your goals and ambitions?
Why have featured profiles? The answer is simple, we are all inspired by someone who has done something that contributes to our lives in a positive and profound way.
IndigenousSpirit.Com recognizes the impact that role models of all ages play in the greater dynamics of Indigenous culture and communities. As a result, we developed the Featured Profiles section to give honor and respect to the many individuals who have done something that merits recognition, be it grand or small.
Want to nominate a person? Then we congratulate you for wanting to do so, and the process is easy! Email our Hostess and include the following information:
1. Name the Indigenous person you’d like to nominate
2. Who are they? (Youth, Student, Elder, or Role Model)
3. Short Write Up - Why do you feel they should be nominated?
4. Support the Nomination - one (or more) person should follow up your nomination stating they support the nomination, and why.
5. Tell us about yourself – take a few minutes to fill in a free profile at http://www.indigenousspirit.com/ and be sure to tell your friends where they can find you!
Please remember: To get their consent first (if your able to) before submitting a nomination. If the person your nominating has an IndigenousSpirit.Com free profile that we can link their Featured Profile Page, let us know! If they do not have an IndigenousSpirit.Com free profile, they can get one by filling in a free profile form here.
Chi-Meegwetch for placing your nomination of an Indigenous youth, student, Elder or role model.

First Nation Web Sites
Consider the following:
o First Nation web sites are as unique as the communities themselves, many offer photo galleries, community news and postings of events such as pow wow’s.
o Many web sites currently offer directory listings for First Nation communities and organizations, and we as a Nation are actively taking advantage of these listings. Currently, tribal councils and political territorial organizations, regional offices with web directories, Dept. of Indian Affairs, as well as other Canadian government sites, such as the Canadian Aboriginal Portal are offering free listings.
o For the First Nations that have web sites, their web sites are “linked” from the site listing them, allowing internet “surfers” the ability to directly click the web site link and arrive on the First Nations web site. While you may enjoy having your First Nation listed, without having your own web site, you are missing the additional “online traffic” that so many of your neighbouring First Nation communities and friends enjoy.
o For less then $1,500.00* your community can have its own web site, and participate in the global economy in numerous ways.
o According to the Neilsen/Net Ratings internet users continue to grow. With demographic statistics indicating an increased internet growth rate right across the board, the online community is becoming more diverse and culturally aware of other Nations throughout the World. With more First Nation communities coming online, there has been an increase in official First Nation web sites.
o Join the global community now with your own official web site, developed according to your community’s specific needs. Share your culture, heritage, and history, as well as informing the external world about your current issues, needs and concerns for the future, and so much more!

FAQ : First Nation Web Site Development
What are the Web Site Statistics of First Nations in Ontario?
Of 136 First Nations in Ontario, 39.7% (54 First Nations) have their own web site, 54.4% (74 First Nations) do not have their own web site, and 5.9% (18 First Nations) are undetermined. As more First Nations across Canada gain access to internet services many see the increasing benefits of having an official web site.
How does having a corporate website benefit the people of each individual band?
Considering that more then 54% of aboriginal people live outside the First Nations, there are numerous benefits in terms of creating and sustaining a nation’s unity, promoting programs, providing history and information on current issues and concerns, plus sharing our culture, teachings and lifestyle.
How does being informed… get me a better community?
I took the opportunity to browse several First Nation web sites and loved it! It was like being there, especially being able to view pictures of community gatherings and events, as well as reading local community news, it made me feel good! And, even though they were not from my area, it eased my own feelings of being far from home; it’s comforting to be able to “see” First Nation people, my people, again.
My First Nation has a profile on a web site, why do we need our own website?
Firstly, congratulations for having your First Nation profile online via Tribal Council, PTO, INAC, or other organization web site list or directory. However, having a profile is not the same thing as having a web site of your own. As mentioned above, there are many reasons and uses for web sites – that is up to you!
What are the costs - is this going to be expensive?
No, custom designed web sites are surprisingly inexpensive. In this age of mass media and newly evolving technology, the global market place is quickly becoming a vital factor to all peoples, organizations and business. The law of supply and demand control pricing, gone are the days where a web site would cost you tens of thousands in development alone! Today web site designs, web site hosting, and domain names are affordably priced. You pay once to have your web site designed, and pay yearly for your web site hosting and domain name, it’s a simple process.
What about maintenance and updating my web site?
General maintenance and updates are normally done in-house by you or one of your staff. However, we understand that not everyone has web site design skills and do not have a webmaster on staff. Indigenousspirit.com offers this type of service, in affordable monthly packages.
Where can I find more information?

Authentic Ojibway Tikinagans
Who am I?I'm the one in the picture in my own Tikinagan at the age of 9 months.
My name is Irene Goodwin, I’m an Ojibway from Northwestern Ontario, currently residing in Ottawa.
The first half of my life was one of experiencing the Indigenous lifestyle, culture and heritage. Our traditional lands are not recognized as a First Nation or reserve - we lived a lifestyle based on the lands, moving from region to region according to the weather conditions and availability of wildlife and game animals. As Ojibways leading a traditional lifestyle we used natural materials and items that suited our peoples.
In terms of our infants, we used what is known as Tikinagans to both wrap and carry our young babies and children, keeping them safe and secure, even while moving from one area to the next. My family has, for many generations used Tikinagans, and we continue to use them for our own babies today.
My mother, Lena Slipperjack created 2 beautiful tikinagans for sale.
These tikinagans (baby cradle boards) are elaborately beaded; hand carved, painted and finished, and include the internal pad and wrappings. They are created for actual use, but can be displayed as beautiful pieces of art.
